Stars and Stripes artists' conversation

With its 50 stars and 13 stripes, the American Flag has long been a symbol of national unity. It has represented pride in our "great democratic experiment," espousing the values of freedom, equality, bravery and independence.

Our nation, at its best.

But the Flag has likewise been unfurled over a host of evils: unjust wars and divisiveness, imperialism and the white washing of history. When we’ve been at our worst, it has also represented us.

The Flag has held aspiration, hope, and pride from new US citizenship ceremonies to home town parades. We’ve all heard Johnny Cash’s rich baritone talk-sing Ragged Old Flag…

We’ve also seen it claimed and co-opted to the point one might ask, What all has it represented? Whose flag is it? What exactly does this ubiquitous symbol communicate today?

In this show, 14 local artists engage with ‘Old Glory’ to explore these questions, addressing the flag as symbol - its history and significance.

We hope you will come join us for the show’s opening, Sat, July 1st, 3-6p.
A vast range of powerful and thought-provoking artwork will be on display. We will also have a pop-up by Costa’s Tacos! So come hungry for sustenance - thought, food, and otherwise.

We will also be holding an artists' conversation on Sat, Aug 5th, in order to delve a little deeper into the answers that come when we all ask ourselves, "What does the Flag mean to me?"

Please join us!
